Longwood Gardens

107 degrees inside the conservatory at Longwood Gardens yesterday, made the 97 degrees outside feel ‘cool’. Yesterday was my wife’s birthday, and to celebrate she wanted to run down towards Philly to Longwood Gardens. I’m not one that would desire to spend a lengthy amount of time at a plant place, especially in the heat. So I gave myself a little challenge. First I didn’t want to have a big sign that says, ‘photographer’ on my back so I took off the battery grip off the D700. 2nd I only took 2 lenses, the 50mm f/1.4 and the 85 f/1.8. Both of these lenses have high quailty glass and can produce tack sharp images, but yet are small and unassuming. Neither of these lenses are ‘macro’ in any way. I went about the day looking to create images that had detail and shallow depth of field.

My wife shares a birthday with her Grandpa and he gave her a call to wish her ‘Happy Birthday’. I try not to over photograph my wife, but sometimes it’s hard not to capture such a beautiful woman. She’s got her drink and map in hand, and she still looks gorgeous in this shot!

I was really happy with the way my images turned out. I was shooting in harsh lighting, we were there from 1-4pm, and I was pleased I was able to find ‘open’ shade and create some fun images. To see more from the day visit my Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/halladayphotography

New Studio Mod

I’ve been thinking of ways I can make changes to my studio setup, without spending a lot of money. Well, yesterday I came up with a solution that cost me nothing (because I already had the materials).

Again I photographed my wife’s fake flowers. My wife really liked the look and wanted to know if we could paint a room that color! Oh boy, I think I might have created more work for myself!

New Setup:

  • Gray Seamless paper
  • White trim (left over from living room project)
  • Laminate flooring (left over from kitchen project)

Laid the flooring, pulled down my seamless paper, laid a piece of trim across the bottom. Done, a new ‘room’ ready for photographing! I see lots of flexibility in this setup for future modifications. I can easily change the wall (just switch seamless rolls).

That’s My Girl…

Yesterday after my little girl woke up from her nap, she wanted to play in the basement. I thought that was fine, because I had some work to do as well. She grabbed her rocking chair and ran over to my studio setup, and said, “Daddy, take picture!”. I couldn’t say no, if someone in my house is begging for me to take their picture I jump. So I flew upstairs, grabbed my camera and whipped together a quick setup. Hair a mess, a white onesie, dirty jeans and silly socks (I bet nobody has had quite this put together of a model!)

Here’s the setup: Gray Seamless backdrop : 1 strobe (no modifier) mounted above the model aimed at the backdrop : 1 strobe w/ beauty dish and diffuser in front and above the model angled at approx. 45°. That’s it, really simple.
